PAF College Lower Topa : A Brief Introduction

In early 1930s, the British government maintained a small summer training establishment for Royal Army at Lower Topa in the scenic Murree Hills of the Himalayan Range. On1st May 1950 Lower Topa became a regular RPAF station and in 1952, the Defense Committee under the chairmanship of the then Prime Minister, Liaquat Ali Khan, approved a project of establishing two "Tributary schools" to provide flight cadets for training at PAF Academy Asghar Khan, Risalpur. Hence, an agreement was signed with the Air Service Training Limited Humble (South Hampton), UK to operate and manage the project for first five years. The Board of Governors included Secretary Defense as the Chairman and Commander-in-Chief Royal Pakistan Air Force, Air vice Marshal L W Cannon as Deputy Chairman. RPAF Public School Lower Topa took its start in May, 1953 with the arrival of the British staff, AST Ltd, UK. The institution took shape under the dedicated efforts of its first Principal Mr. F H Shaw and his British team, who rendered curator’s services to make the school a top class institution. The school served the PAF very well till its merger in PAF College Sargodha in July, 1968.

In June 1998, the need for a tributary Institution was felt again and after a period of 30 years, the institution was reopened. Group Captain M Tariq Quraishi was appointed as the first Principal after revival. He was promoted to the rank of Air Commodore in 1999 and elevated to the designation of Commandant to shoulder the additional command of PAF Base Lower Topa. A group of 120 students was inducted in 8th and 9th classes. The entries to PAF Public School, Lower Topa from the very beginning had been in alphabetical order and the institution had U, V and W entries when it was amalgamated with PAF College, Sargodha. Therefore, the new entries continued that sequence and were known as X and Y entries. The selection was made from across the country. The students went through a series of tests before being finally selected. The tests included written test, medical test, intelligence test and interview. At the end, a merit list of 120 was finalized for the two entries. In April, 2001 Air Commodore M Tariq Quraishi, was assigned the duty of Assistant Chief of Air Staff Education and Air Commodore Farooq H Kiyani (R), former Assistant Chief of Air Staff Education, was appointed as Principal, PAF Public School Lower Topa. His successor, Air Commodore M Tanveer (R) became the Principal in March, 2002. Air Commodore M Tariq Qurush on his retirement from PAF was requested to once again to take over as Principal, PAF College Lower Topa. To run PAF College Lower Topa on British public School lines in its true spirit, PAF decided to train its faculty in Britain and employ a British Principal coming from British Public Schools System. Therefore, the services of Mr David George Hepworth were hired to run this prestigious institute as Principal. Then Air Vice Marshal Syed Imtiaz Hyder (R) was appointed as the Principal who after 5 years of his stay was replaced by an Ex-Topian Air Marshal Hifazat Ullah Khan (R) was appointed as Principal PAF College Lower Topa. The current Principal AVM Furqan Zaidi (R) took over as Principal in September, 2018. This year will be welcoming AW entry to complete our alphabetic cycle after revival.
